책을 다 읽고 나서 나는 신경숙 작가의 《바이올렛》을 떠올렸다. 그리고는 생각했다. 우리나라 문학 작품들은 왜 이렇게 처절하고 아프고 엄혹할까. 아니면 내가 읽은 작품들이 유독 그런 걸까. 어떤 결핍을 가지고 세상을 마주하며 하루하루 살아가는 사람들. 그 상처가 평생 아물지 않는다 해도, 떠올릴 때마다 상상하기조차 어려운 끔찍한 괴로움이 덮쳐온다고 해도 살아 있다는 그 이유 하나만으로 어떻게든 살아가야만 하는 삶. 책에 묘사된 모든 인물들은 과거에 겪었던 사건과 경험에서 생긴 트라우마를 한평생 짊어지고 산다. 그러다 어떤 계기로 일상을 벗어나게 되고, 새로운 환경과 상황을 따라가면서 지나온 삶과 관계를 반추하게 되고, 결국 스스로를 찾아 나가면서 간직하고 있던 아픔과 정면으로 마주하게 된다.
우리 사회에, 혹은 삶에 문학이 필요한 이유는 무엇일까? 이 책을 읽어 나가면서 스스로 던진 수많은 질문들에서 그 답을 찾을 수 있을 것 같다. 묵직한 물음들이 머릿속을 떠다녔고, 그래서인지 쉽게 책장을 넘기지 못해 몇 주간에 걸쳐서 읽게 되었다. 현실로 돌아온 나에게 또다시 스스로 질문을 던지면서 나는 이 글을 쓰고 있다. 모쪼록 모두가 어딘가 존재할 각자의 의선을 생각하며 하루하루 삶에 버팀목이 될 수 있기를.
After finishing this book, I was reminded of Shin Kyung-sook's Violet. And then I wondered to myself: why are works of Korean literature so devastating, painful, and unforgiving? Or is it just that the books I happen to read are particularly so? People facing the world day by day while carrying a deep sense of lack. A life that must somehow go on for the sole reason that one is still breathing—even if those wounds never heal for a lifetime, and even if unimaginable, horrific agony washes over them every time the memories surface. Every character depicted in the book carries trauma born from past events and experiences throughout their entire lives. Then, triggered by a certain moment, they step outside their daily routines; following unfamiliar environments and circumstances, they look back on the lives and relationships they have passed through, and in searching for themselves, they eventually come face to face with the pain they had been holding inside.
Why does our society—or our lives—need literature? I feel I can find the answer in the countless questions I asked myself while reading through this book. Heavy questions drifted through my mind, and perhaps because of that, I could not turn the pages easily and ended up reading it over the course of several weeks. Returning to reality, I am writing these words while once again asking myself those very questions. Above all, I hope that everyone can think of their own Uiseon somewhere out there, finding a pillar to lean on through each passing day.
영화가 끝나고 나서야 이 영화가 3부작이라는 사실을 알았다.
3부작이라 아쉽다는 얘기는, 그래도 재밌게 봤고 앞으로 나올 이야기가 기대도 되지만 또 그 기다림이 힘들 것임을 알기에 떠오른 생각이겠지.
중간중간 블랙코미디적인 요소가 많이 섞여 있다. 그래서 생각해 보면 사실 《곡성》에도 그런 요소들이 많이 녹아 있었다. 영화의 스토리나 장르의 특성상 진짜 진지 빨고 만든 영화가 아니면 몰입하기가 어려운데, 중간중간의 그런 위트가 긴박한 상황 속에서도 또 지루하지 않게 극을 잘 이끌어 가는 느낌이었다.
영화를 다 보고 나서 여러 가지 의문들이 들었지만, 일단은 3부작이라고 하니 말을 아껴야겠다.
긴 러닝타임이 느껴지지 않을 정도로 상당히 재미있게 보았고, 최근에 해외에서 반응이 좋다는데 많은 사랑을 받아서 2부, 3부도 성공적으로 제작되어 빨리 나왔으면 하는 바람이다.
그나저나 마지막에 그 조인성은... 혹시 나홍진 감독이 아리 애스터를 좋아하나?
Only after the movie ended did I find out that this film is actually a trilogy.
Feeling a bit disappointed that it's a trilogy probably means I genuinely enjoyed it and am looking forward to what comes next—while already knowing how tough the wait is going to be.
There is a lot of dark comedy woven throughout the film. Thinking back, The Wailing actually had plenty of those elements melted into it as well. Given the nature of the story and genre, it's hard to stay immersed unless a film is made with dead-serious conviction, yet those flashes of wit in the middle of such breathless tension kept the pacing engaging without ever feeling dull.
Plenty of questions lingered in my mind after the credits rolled, but since it's a three-part story, I'll hold my tongue for now.
I thoroughly enjoyed it—so much so that I barely felt the long runtime. I hear the overseas reception has been great recently, so I hope it receives plenty of love and that Parts 2 and 3 get greenlit and released soon.
By the way, that final scene with Zo In-sung at the end... Does Na Hong-jin happen to be a fan of Ari Aster?
저번 유나바머도 그렇듯이, 역시나 살인자의 이야기가 넘쳐나는 넷플릭스의 작품이다.
영화를 보고 나서 시간이 아깝다고 느껴지는 경우는 상당히 드문데, 이 영화는 중간중간 끌까 말까 너무 고민하다 결국 끝까지 보게 되었다.
모르겠다. 나는 이런 영화에서 어떤 것을 얻을 수 있는 건지.
어떤 의미도 감정도 안 떠오르고, 이런 최악의 스토리에서 뭔가를 얻어내려고 애쓰는 시간조차도 아까운 느낌이다.
예전에 제목도 안 떠오르는 3류 조폭 영화 이후로 이런 감정은 또 오랜만이다.
Much like the Unabomber series before, this is yet another Netflix production overflowing with stories of murderers.
It is quite rare for me to feel that my time was completely wasted after watching a movie, but with this one, I hesitated repeatedly whether to turn it off, only to end up sitting through to the very end.
I honestly don't know what anyone is supposed to take away from a film like this.
No particular meaning or emotion resonates, and even the time spent trying to extract something worthwhile from such a dreadful story feels like a waste.
